EPHESUS
Ephesus is an ancient city which is
within the borders of Seljuk. It is
on the toot of Mount Panayr and
Mount Bulbul, 3km. west of Seljuk.
It is one of the best protected
ancient cities of western Asia.It
become on important tourism center
because it is a holy place to visit
for Christianity. Most of the
existing buildings were built during
the Roman peripd. In the first years
of Christianity. St. Paul (Paulus)
come here and stayed for 3.5 years
and St. John (Hoanna) come here and
wrote the Bible here. Ephesus was
the most famous city in Western
Anatolia in the lonian period
because the virgin Mary lived here
in her last years. The bible was
written here council meetings were
held 3 times and the first 7
churches were established here.
Ephesus is the second city after
Istanbul which is visited most by
tourists Ephesus moved 5 times
becouse of politiced and
geographical difficulties. The city
was under lonian authority in the
XI. century B.C. and under Ottoman
authority after 1390. The breeks
occupaid the city on 22 May 1919 but
it was freed on 8 September 1922.
HADRIAN'S TEMPLE
It is the smallest and the most
important monument of Ephesus. It
was built in 138 a.d.
BELEVI MAUSOLEUM
It is the highest and the biggest
tomb of old Anatolia. It is located
between Izmir and Efes.
SEVEN SLEEPINGS
It is cavern where 8 Christians and
their dog escaping from the cruelty
of the emperor took shelter in. They
slept for 200 years in the cavern
and when they woke up the saw that
Christianity had become a legal
religion. When they died the were
buried in this cavern.
ISABEY MOSQUE
It was built in 1375 and It is the
most fascinating and the oldest
Islamic building in Seljuk.
ARTEMIS TEMPLE
It Is accepted as one of the 7
miracles of the world and it is the
biggest building of the hellenistic
period. Today there are only ruins
left.
MARBLE STREET
The theater the port passing in
front of celcus library one well
preserved. It was the main street of
the city for carriers. It was
restores through the ages.
CELSUS LIBRARY
Excavations of the Celcus Library
were made at the beginning of the
20. century by Austrian
archelogists. It is know that the
building was seriously damaged
because of a fire in 260. The Celcus
library was the biggest cultural and
scientific center of the time
because of architectural
characteristics and the variet of
books it had. The front of the
library is full of ornaments and the
three doors with statues and reliefs
are interesting. In the hiche in
front of the library there are four
statues of woman that symbolism
''Science'', ''destiny'', ''virtue''
and '' intelligence''. The reasing
hall of the library was burnt at an
unknown date, but it is front was
not damaged.
AYASULUK HILL
It was built in the early period of
Chrisstianity. Later Seljuklu
restored it. It is said that St.
John died here. The tower walls of
this hill still exist.
THEATRE
It is on mount Panayr and it has a
capacity of 24.000 people. It is one
of the wall preserved buildings in
this region.
EFES ARCHEOLOGY MUSEUM
It is on the Efes-Seljuk road. It is
one of the most modern museums of
Turkey. Many object found in Seljuk
can be seen in this museum.
